The h2 Solution

The new h2 Solution website is now live. I designed and built it from scratch for the h2 Solution, a business consultancy specialising in diversity and equality management. I also designed their logo.

The site was hand-coded in notepad2 before being turned into a WordPress template. It includes a blog and Twitter and Delicious integration.

Bond

I’m currently working part-time as Online Content Editor for Bond, the UK membership body for non-governmental organisations working in international development.

Bond does some great work, and there is some interesting content to work with too, though the website isn’t achieving all it could be at the moment.

Expect to see some changes to www.bond.org.uk over the coming months.

St George Driving

I designed and built a new website for St George’s Driving School in East Sussex. The brief was to build the site around the eponymous flag: it’s a simple 2-page site incorporating a php contact form and a very shiny red Nissan Micra. St George’s offer door-to-door driving lessons in Hastings, Eastbourne and Bexhill. www.stgeorgedriving.com.

I’ve designed and built a new website, www.michaelhonnor.com, for this fantastic contemporary British landscape artist, who also happens to be my dad. The idea is that he will upload new work every month or so, keeping it fresher than his old site, which tended to get quickly stale and out of date. For the time being I’ve also included a Flash gallery page, though as the CMS fills up with more art I’ll replace this with some more creative gallery options using categories, chronology and jQuery.

The design builds on the WPESP WordPress portfolio framework, which I’ve adapted to include custom fields for each piece, that he can fill in when he uploads new images. It also uses jQuery for the portfolio carousel on the homepage and an improved version of the TimThumb script to build different image sizes on the fly.

It also includes an Amazon-powered shop, through which visitors can buy his book.

I am building a new site (www.cathrynkemp.com) for this Sussex-based artist, who paints large abstract works. The site is still a work in progress but already has a jQuery album showing some of her latest work.

I’ve set up and added some content to iQuiteLike.com, a url I’ve owned for ages. Occasionally I come up with grand, social networking plans for it, but until I do something more interesting with it, it will serve as a cross-media repository for my favourite albums, books, films and websites.

For more along similar lines, the sidebar on the right has my recent bookmarks and the albums I’ve listened to most in the last three months.

Catalyst

I designed, managed, edited and wrote for the website for Catalyst Magazine. Run by the Commission for Racial Equality, the magazine was semi-independent and commissioned external writers and illustrators to look critically at issues of race, identity and community.

When the CRE became a part of the new Equality and Human Rights Commission the magazine ceased to exist, though a snapshot of the website is still online.

Catalyst was at the forefront of new thinking on race relations and racial equality, both in Britain and abroad. We chose the name to reflect the magazine’s role: to kick-start debates, discussions, new ideas and arguments – about where we are now, and where we might be going in the future.

The magazine dealt with issues of identity, citizenship, culture and community, and how these concepts are continually evolving and re-shaping the society we live in.

The Commission for Racial Equality’s contribution to a global debate, it was not a house magazine to promote CRE viewpoints or activities. It encouraged frank and open discussion and engaged with views across the political spectrum, and covered a broad range of topics, from policy and the law, to economics, politics, sport, science, culture and the arts.

The website provided an online version of each issue as well as additional content, supplementing and responding to material in the print version of the magazine, plus interactive features to allow a wider audience to join the debate. In turn the material and comments from the website fed back into the print version of Catalyst.

Among the pieces I wrote were a review of the Tate’s photography retrospective, How We Are; a look at truth commissions around the world and an assessment of the claims of modern slavery. I went to the highly charged launch of a short Russian film, interviewed people about Cornishness and reviewed exhibitions in London and Poland.

New website

This is the new website I’ve been building. I’m using WordPress and a heavily adapted version of the excellent Titan theme, plus jQuery for the slideshow and mouseover effects, sometimes in conjunction with the TimThumb PHP script.

I’m also using the Twitter for WordPress and Delicious for WordPress plugins. The photo albums are made using Bananalbum.

ActionAid

In 2007 and 2008 I worked as web editor for the international development charity ActionAid. I looked after the main UK site, as well as working on campaigns and email marketing.

One of the most enlightened, forward-thinking and interesting charities, ActionAid do fantastic work with the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world to fight for their rights to food, shelter, work, healthcare and a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

Some of Britain’s best chefs came together for the 30 years on a plate celebration, creating recipes to reflect diversity and the wonders of curried goat and Anthony Worrall-Thompson. I designed and put together the website.
